Grand celebrations at the traditional inn

Auerbach's Keller embarks on the "Triennium" for its 500th anniversary celebration

Leipzig - When Dr. Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach first served wine to students in the cellar of his house in 1525, it marked the birth of one of Germany's most traditional guesthouses - Auerbachs Keller. The Leipzig physician and university professor laid the foundation for a success story that continues to this day. Auerbachs Keller will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2025. "We want to celebrate and honor this unique event with our guests through a variety of events," highlights innkeeper René Stoffregen. Over the next three years, known as the Jubilee Triennium, there will be a diverse program. The highlight will be Easter 2025.

Guests can look forward to some surprises: various events will be offered for young and old. In addition, numerous historical exhibits will be displayed in showcases to make the 500-year history of Auerbachs Keller visible to guests. Throughout the ages, this landmark of Leipzig has always been lively - famous personalities, including kings, artists, poets, scientists, and politicians, were guests here.

Furthermore, a special anniversary wine will be produced, an anniversary aquavit will be distilled, and a very special anniversary menu will enrich the menu. "And from now on, Dr. Faust will carry the message into the world with a waving anniversary flag in our logo," says Stoffregen.

Despite Corona and the war in Ukraine, the planning is in full swing. "Auerbachs Keller has always been a place of conviviality and international understanding. It has survived the plague, wars, dictatorships, and communism, so we will also overcome the current challenges," Stoffregen is certain.

An integral part of the events are the historically significant personalities directly associated with the history of the house. These include the famous "Cellar Barrel Ceremony" with the cellar master and the culinary city tour "No Lotterleben!" with the historical former mayor and Leipzig builder Hieronymus Lotter. Currently, there is also the theater dinner "Luther's Private Life" with the reformer and his wife Katharina von Bora.

The new edition of the "KellerKurier" has just been freshly printed as well. House historian Bernd Weinkauf has compiled interesting background stories for it.

Auerbachs Keller in Mädler Passage is the most famous traditional restaurant in Leipzig. Wine has been served here to students since 1525. The establishment takes its name from its founder, the physician and university professor Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach (Upper Palatinate). In 1625, his great-grandson Johann Vetzer had Faust's barrel ride painted on two panels in the cellar vault. These later inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to write his Faust epic and brought the former student pub worldwide fame.
